Become a Class 1 Driver

BC Trucking association MELT grant

The BCTA is not currently accepting applications for the MELT (Mandatory Entry-Level Training) Grant Opportunity. Funding has been fully allocated for the 2024/25 fiscal year. If you are interested in submitting an application for training, please check back in March 2025 for updated information.

The BC Trucking Association (BCTA) offers a MELT grant for candidates who meet the criteria. In certain cases, Arrow may assist an applicant in applying and will help them secure employment.

ELEGIBILITY FOR MELT

Cannot be working full-time at any company at time of application
Must be Canadian citizens, or permanent resident
May be employed* or unemployed, may already work for the motor carrier but in a different capacity, or may be a new hire.
Cannot already have a ticketed trade certificate

STEP 1

SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION

Follow the instructions in How Ready to Apply below to send in your application.

STEP 2

APPLICATION REVIEW

If we think your application is a good fit, we’ll invite you for an interview and conduct reference checks, as well as review your driver’s abstract.

STEP 3

BACKGROUND CHECK

If your background check is successful, Arrow will send you an Intent to Hire letter.

STEP 4

OBTAIN CLASS 1 LEARNER’S PERMIT

Apply for a Class 1 learner’s permit with ICBC. Visit Commercial driver’s licence (icbc.com)for more details.

STEP 5

ENROLL IN THE MELT PROGRAM

STEP 6

COMPLETE THE MELT PROGRAM

After successfully completing MELT, you’ll receive your Class 1 license.

STEP 7

TRAINING WITH ARROW

New Class 1 drivers will be paired with an Arrow driver mentor until confident to drive independently.

FUNDING FOR MELT

The cost of MELT is approximately $16,000 CDN
On occasion, Arrow can obtain government funding through BCTA to help candidates through the cost of MELT
The Government of BC has a range of funding and cost offset options

DRIVING WITH ARROW

Arrow generally accepts MELT applicants in the spring time (mid-February to mid-April)
My normal process is to talk to the candidate about the reality of being a driver for Arrow, what it takes to be a driver, get an understanding of why they want to go into this field, and basically just gauge if they understand what it takes, as well as the wage and hours etc.
If you feel this candidate has a good grasp of these things and you’d like to proceed, the first step would be to collect their abstract to ensure they are a fit. Also, we would need to conduct 2 reference checks on the individual as well as a copy of their resume. If those things look good, we can work on a MELT funding application with the below steps.
